10 Facts about Credit Unions

October 19 is International Credit Union day and being a member of a credit union is a win for your finances for many reasons. Here are 10 facts to help you learn a little more about credit unions and what makes them a great option for your money.

Fact #1: President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act in 1934 to promote thriftiness and prevent unusually high interest rates during the Great Depression.

Fact #2: Credit unions are insured. Most credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), which provides essentially the same coverage on funds as does the FDIC. If the word “federal” is in the name, they are insured. If not, check with your credit union. It may be state-chartered or have private deposit insurance, or both. Insight Credit Union is federally insured by the NCUA .

Fact #3: Eligibility is fairly flexible at most credit unions. Most require residency in a certain community, city or state, or that you are employed by the credit union’s sponsor company. But requirements are pretty broad on most, making eligibility at a credit union a possibility for almost anyone.

Fact #4: Credit unions are not-for-profit institutions and are owned by the people they serve, not by a few shareholders.

Fact #5: Credit unions can offer better rates on savings accounts, lower interest rates on loans, and little or no fees on accounts because they are exempt from federal taxes. Credit unions still pay state taxes.

Fact #6: The credit union’s board of directors, which is elected by members, can set loan limits in an effort to help the credit union grow.

Fact #7: Credit union members have democratic control of the credit union and can attend and participate in regular and special membership meetings.

Fact #8: Non-members benefit from credit unions too. Competition for low rates keeps banks’ fees in check, thereby benefiting nonmembers.

Fact #9: With more than 5,000 credit unions across the globe and access to tens of thousands of ATMs, credit unions are increasingly convenient on a national scale.

Fact #10: Once you are a member of a credit union, you stay a member for as long as you maintain your deposit account (share), regardless of whether or not you continue to meet the original eligibility requirements.

Community Matters

Comm Foundation Logo6AAs you read our various newsletters and web updates, you may wonder why we support and participate in so many community events throughout Central Florida.  Ultimately the answer is pretty straightforward – community matters!  To say it another way, the people who make up our communities – our family, our friends, and our neighbors – really matter to us.  See, we live and work here too, and we want to do what we can to create a great life for everyone.

From the business perspective, we strive for that by offering great products and services for our members at reasonable rates so they can save money and finance their needs and wants – like new cars, a nice home, college education, great vacations, or whatever is important to each member.

From the community perspective, we want to support the events that make life in our neighborhoods enjoyable.   Whether it’s fun events, like community celebrations, music festivals, fireworks displays, or a food truck showcase, or it’s an event to bring people together like National Night Out, we want to help provide the means for such events to happen.  We know these sorts of events add to the quality of our lives and bring us closer together as friends and neighbors.

From the educational perspective, we want to support financial literacy as well as educational opportunities throughout the area.  We provide financial literacy through seminars at our branches for adults and through partnerships with various schools for school-aged children.

And now we also offer support through our Insight Community Foundation.  The Insight Community Foundation considers donations for organizations that support educational activities that improve and advance well-being at all educational levels.  For more information or to request funds from the Insight Community Foundation, click here.

We hope you love your community as much as Insight Credit Union does…and when you see us at a community event, please stop by and say hello!

Free Community Shred-It Events

iStock_000016002091_MediumIs your shred piling up? Don’t miss this great opportunity to protect yourself from identity theft by safely destroying your personal documents and papers at one of our free community Shred-It events! Now is the perfect time to clean out that home office or file cabinet you’ve been meaning to get to.

Insight is partnering with American Document Destruction Corp. to bring a Shred-It event near you.

You may attend as many events as you wish. However, due to heavy volumes, guests may bring a maximum of five boxes of personal documents to shred per vehicle. Insight Shred-It events may be cancelled at any time or end early due to equipment failure, truck capacity reached, bad weather or any other unforeseen circumstance.

Monetary donations will be accepted at each Shred-It event. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
